during the Total Lunar Eclipse of February 20, 2008.
(Eastern Standard Time)
A total eclipse of the Moon occurs during the night of Wednesday, February 20/21, 2008. The entire event is visible from South America and most of North America (on Feb. 20) as well as Western Europe, Africa, and western Asia (on Feb. 21). During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon's disk can take on a dramatically colorful appearance from bright orange to blood red to dark brown and (rarely) very dark gray.
An eclipse of the Moon can only take place at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow. The shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped parts, one nested inside the other. The outer shadow or penumbra is a zone where Earth blocks some (but not all) of the Sun's rays. In contrast, the inner shadow or umbra is a region where Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.
If only part of the Moon passes through the umbra, a partial eclipse is seen. However, if the entire Moon passes through the umbral shadow, then a total eclipse of the Moon occurs. For more information on how, what, why, where and when of lunar eclipses, see the special web page lunar eclipses for beginners.

Lunar Lens
Anyone who perceives his Shadow and his Light simultaneously sees himself from two sides and thus gets in the middle.
- C.G. Jung
The Total Lunar Eclipse this week promises a consciousness shakedown.
During the Full Moon on Wednesday night, the reflected light of the Sun will be blocked by the Earth, creating the illusion of the Moon "darkening" as it turns a deep red-brown.
The play of "light" and "dark" is highlighted at each Full Moon. With a Total Lunar Eclipse the effect goes quantum. The cosmic energies transmitted through this portal offer a unique opportunity to see another side of your self, embrace and transform the shadow.
Emotional cleansing triggered by the eclipse can bring balance and restore the self to wholeness. Flow with this energy rather than resist it. Explore the subconscious. Dance with the shadow. Merge with Essence. Let go.
We're dealing with the individual and collective shadow, as world events reveal. Our prayer, intent and conscious participation in this divine drama create an opening for the light of higher consciousness to heal and transform humanity and the Earth.
A new paradigm is emerging. You can help guide this transition through your own practice of mindfulness throughout the eclipse period, and beyond.
Eclipse Details
Eclipse portals create an intense focus of electromagnetic energy that affects our bodies, our emotions and our minds. In Buddhist tradition, eclipses are honored as high holy days with prayer, meditation and ceremony.
Through this portal, our thoughts are amplified exponentially throughout the Earth plane, time, space and all dimensions. Manifestation is accelerated. Especially at this time, it's very important to stay focused on your intent and keep your thoughts positive.
Full Moon Lunar Eclipse (Total) - February 20/21
7:34 PM EST February 20-1:17 AM February 21 (maximum eclipse 10:26 PM EST February 20)
12:34-6:17 AM GMT February 21 (maximum eclipse 3:26 AM GMT February 21)
A total eclipse of the Moon occurs during the night of Wednesday, February 20/21, 2008. It's the last Total Lunar Eclipse until December 2010. Nearly a billion people in the Western Hemisphere, more than 1.5 billion in Europe and Africa, and another half-billion in western Asia will be able to view this eclipse, weather permitting. You don't need special eye protection to view a lunar eclipse. Just watch it!
This eclipse comes with a rare bonus. Saturn and the bright star Regulus will form a broad triangle with the moon's darkened disk. Saturn's position will depend somewhat on your location. Seen from North America, the ringed planet will be above and to the left of the moon's center at mid-totality (10:26 PM EST on February 20). At the same time, Regulus will sit just above and to the right of the moon.
Lunations, especially eclipses, deal with opposites and seeming duality, enticing us to integrate opposing energies and find a balance within. Both the Pisces/Virgo and Aquarius/Leo polarities are highlighted in this eclipse.
The Sun in Pisces opposes the Moon and Saturn in Virgo, highlighting the importance of spiritual evolution and divine service. The nodal axis in Leo/Aquarius is strengthened by Venus, Mercury, Chiron and Neptune in Aquarius. The needs of the collective outweigh the desires of the individual. How are you being called to service at this time? Whom do you serve? How are you contributing?
What kind of world do you choose to create as we transition to the next world age?

Help

A friend of mine who is a jyotish said the following about eclipses,
“The total lunar eclipse on the 21th will be visible throughout north and south america. All eclipses, solar as well as lunar, are deemed inauspicious and we are advised not to expose ourselves to those shadows, the nodes. It is all recommended that for the 2 weeks from Feb. 7 to Feb. 21, the time between the eclipses, we avoid doing anything upon which the future depends much. This includes signing contracts, buying houses, travelling etc. Travel for one's guru or other sacred or divinely inspired purpose would be an exception.
Later this year there will be a total solar eclipse on August 1 and a partial lunar 2 weeks later. ”
Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Yes, it's good to have all viewpoints. This way, we can go with what resonates.
That's one of the reasons I read books while pregnant. The one thing I learned from the plethora of advice was: follow your own inner guidance! It helped when I had to face all the strong opposition to many of the freedoms I gave my children.
On the eclipse day, I wonder what I'll do! Last year, I took pics, and orbs showed up in them. I couldn't get the moon clearly enough.
love the Jung quote…thanks for posting..
will be sitting in prayer and meditation, this night when
the moon bows..
Om Shanti

Thank you for posting this Meenakshi! Last year I did a blog on the lunar eclipse and was much more aware … this year I seem less prepared. Tonight, the skies are clear here and the stars, the moon seem so VIBRANT … lots of energy. When I photograph the moon lately … I too get many orbs. So much activity.
I think I will heed some of the wisdom I'm gathering here … and spend the time around the eclipse … pulling in the energy in a reflective and meditative state.
peace,

PraIses to you Meenakshi!! Thanks so much for putting this up! I have a feeling this years is going to be quite special!! I will take some pics as well to share, now.. lets all just will the skies to be cloudless on that night eh? heh. ;) great post, I cant wait!! Blessings and Love~

I like the meditative aspect too. Though I must say that seeing mother earth's shadow on the moon, made me feel so wonderful last year. Somehow closer to her, even though I was actually closer standing on her!
Seeing earth as a whole, was special.
And if it's rainy, and I can't join the Astronomical society to view it thru the telescope, then I'll take it that Otter's jyotish friend's advice was meant to prevail this time.
CAn't believe I never did get to see Comet Holmes “in real life”!
We're getting a big storm in tomorrow. Darn! I've been watching the moon this last week as it has been showing up during the day and low in the sky. I thought something was going on but I'm glad that you posted this about the eclipse because I wouldn't have known about it until it was too late!

we've had several veils on tonight…the veil of clouds veiling the earth casting a shadow on the moon!
There's another related discussion here, on the Living Metaphysics pod.
Joy has written a lyrical poem about the full moon eclipse: Love Letters Blown In By The Wind
I was so excited that on my way to a foot bath party with some friends I was able to see the lunar eclipse from start to finish! We didn't get the predicted storm and I was very happy about that! I would have hated to miss the show!
